As I already wrote many times, this Blog is just for me and for my poor memory that is raped every day by thousands ideas, dreams, problems, my dog… So i use to write things that helped me doing something for the future me, and since i really belive in sharing knowledge on the net i publish them. So if you are about installing WikiMedia on a Debian Squeeze Virtual Machine with ISPConfig, here you are my experience so you can avoid mistakes and messing with operating system.

System Requirements

Mandatory:

Optional Requirements

  • ImageMagick or GD is required for image thumbnailing.
  • TeX is required for the in-line display of mathematical formulae.
  • Sendmail is required in order for the system to be able to send e-mails.
  • Shell access is required to run maintenance scripts; upgrading may be more difficult without it.

Downloading the package:

Download from this link directly into webserver root dir

(The time I’m writing I downloaded mediawiki-1.20.2.tar.gz) but it will probably change to a newer release, so double check on the website.

cd /var/www/site.com/web/
wget http://download.wikimedia.org/mediawiki/1.20/mediawiki-1.20.2.tar.gz
tar -xvzf media+[tab]
mv mediawiki-1.20.2/* ./
rm -f -r mediawiki-1.20.2*
rm index.html #(defautl page only on ispconfig new created website).
chown -R user:group *

Open in browser http://diydrones.giuseppeurso.net (this is the domain where i’m going to install MediaWiki) and go through the install process, just it happened that i forgot to chown all files to the right user:group then the installation wasn’t able to write the config file, but it prompted me the file for doenload and then i just pasted its contents into the nano editor and saved.

It worked at first try.

Any comment is appreciated

Cheers
